Underground Water Leaks

Method

Line Tracing

Knowing the route is half of finding the leak.

Line tracing identifies the path of a pipe using a signal transmitter and receiver, so investigation and excavation know exactly where the line runs.

How it works

  • Transmitter connected to an accessible point
  • Receiver follows and marks the route
  • Depth estimated where conditions allow

Limits, stated plainly

  • Metallic or traceable lines respond best
  • Non-conductive lines need alternative methods
  • Accuracy varies with depth and soil

Quick answers

Is Line Tracing invasive?

No. The method works from surfaces and accessible points; if a small access point is needed to confirm a finding, it is discussed before anything is opened.

Can Line Tracing be used on its own?

Line Tracing is strongest when paired with a confirming method. Findings are only reported once verified, which is why single-method clues are labelled as such.
